Society for Health Promotion Links (SHPL) in Bangladesh has developed a revolutionary course for Bangladeshi women to gain training and skills needed to be self-sufficient
women's health care providers. This course trains Bangladeshi rural women to fulfill the United Nations recommendations
for reducing mother and child health risks: The Community Maternity Practitioner course.
The Community Maternity
Practitioner program empowers women through self-employment as a health care provider which benefits the rural communities.
CMP's can practice in their home villages through rural-level private practices, or provide care jointly with the village
doctors. CMP's may also employ their communities junior CMP's in their practice. These approaches
enable women to earn a living and maintain acceptable living standards.
Dr. Halida Akhter of Bangladesh is the Founder and Chairperson of Society for Health Promotion Links (SHPL). She received the 2006 United Nations
Population Award for her outstanding work in population and in improving the health and welfare of individuals.
She is internationally recognized for her work dedicated to betterment of women's health and welfare.
