Dr. Halida is a medical graduate from Dhaka
Medical College, Dr. Akhter received her MCPS in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in
Dhaka, Bangladesh. She then earned her MPH and Dr.PH in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.
She obtained
EIS, Epidemic Intelligence Services training at the Division of Reproductive Health, Centers for Disease Control (CDC),
Atlanta, Georgia, USA, under a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship.
Dr. Halida Akhter is currently Director General
of FPAB, a Member Association of IPPF, (International Planned Parenthood Federation), a renowned voluntary organization working
towards promotion of Reproductive Health and Rights.
Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter, of Bangladesh, won 2006 United Nations
Population Award. The Award goes each year to individuals and institutions for their outstanding work in population and in
improving the health and welfare of individuals.
She has also received 'Host Country Award for Scientific
Achievement' in the10th Asian Conference on Diarrheal Disease and Nutrition, December, 2003.
In 1997,
she received the "Outstanding International Alumnus Award for Science/Research" of Johns Hopkins University, School
of Public Health's, Society of Alumni, Baltimore, MD, USA.
Dr. Halida is the recipient of the "Developing
Countries- Award 1995" of the Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany. This award was conferred as a recognition of
outstanding contribution to improve the health status of women and children through scientific work in family planning and
health service delivery as well as life-long research, practical training of field personnel and extensive consultancy engagement
for both the government and the NGO sector in the Family Welfare Programs in Bangladesh.
Dr. Akhter holds numerous
professional affiliations in the areas of family planning, maternal and child health, and population research. Prior to HPL,
she was the director of the Bangladesh Institute of Research for Promotion of Essential & Reproductive Health Technologies
(BIRPERHT). Her career has included positions with the Ford Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
the World Bank.
Since 1985 she has been serving in many WHO -HRP committees including Member, Steering Committee
of WHO Task Force on Safety and Efficacy of Fertility Regulation, Abortion, MCH and Special Program for Research in
Reproductive Health (HRP), World Health Organization, Geneva,
Dr. Akhter has served as member in various
committees including, IMAP;(International Medical Advisory Panel) of IPPF, London; Technical Advisory Panel, Evaluation
of Alternate Business Model, Carolina Population Center, North Carolina; Senior Reproductive Health Advisor, Partners in Population
and Development, Mahakhali, Dhaka. She is currently serving as Co-Chair of Ethical Review Committee (ERC) of ICDDR,B ;
Dr. Akhter's current academic affiliations include her role as Honorary Dean at Shanto Marium University in Dhaka,
Bangladesh and a faculty position as Senior Associate with the Johns Hopkins University.
She serves as on the board
of a number of organizations including Chairperson of Board of PATH, Seattle;
Director of Board of Family Health
International, North Carolina; and Social Marketing Company, Bangladesh,
Chairperson of the Executive Council of
several organizations including, Bangladesh Women's Health Coalition, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Community Development Association.
